A grandfather gives his lifelong map to his grandchild but warns that it cannot show every road. If the child follows only what is already drawn, new lands unknown to the previous generation will remain undiscovered.
Every tradition was once an innovation
We often treat tradition as something that must remain unchanged, yet every tradition resulted from earlier change. What is called old today was once a new idea from another generation.
Inheritance matters only when it is improved
Each generation receives experience, lessons and mistakes paid for with time. It is an invaluable gift, but meaningful only when the receiver continues improving it.
Respect the past by understanding and revising it
Copying the past is not the best way to respect it. Respect means understanding why routes were drawn and having the clarity to revise them as the world changes.
Every generation has a different task
Some generations build, some repair and some simplify what has become too complex. Their tasks differ, but all share the responsibility to leave a better map than the one received.

Knowledge does not evolve by reproducing the old unchanged. It expands as each person adds a perspective, experience or discovery, allowing many hands to continue drawing humanity’s map.
Look again at what part of the map you will redraw
Ask what you still do only because it has always been done, which part of the system should be redrawn and what improvement you want the next generation to receive.
Tradition invites us to continue an unfinished journey
Tradition does not ask us to stop at what already exists. It invites us to continue completing an unfinished journey.
