How to present work in progress so stakeholders can see focus, current state, real evidence of motion, constraints, and the next checkpoint without reading a long task dump.

Doing is often the most ambiguous state

Done has evidence. Blocked has a visible issue.

Doing is often described with vague phrases such as “in progress” or “working on it.”

Activity does not show direction

A list of open tasks does not reveal the real focus.

Good Doing communication highlights the most important workstream.

Framework: Focus → Current State → Evidence of Motion → Constraint → Next Checkpoint

Focus — what is the team prioritizing?

Current State — what state is the work in now?

Evidence of Motion — what shows that the work is actually progressing?

Constraint — what limits speed or options?

Next Checkpoint — when will this state be reviewed again?

Current State should describe a state, not just a verb

“Redesigning onboarding” is vague.

“Three of five screens are structurally resolved and hierarchy testing is underway” is clearer.

Evidence of Motion creates confidence

A new draft, prototype, test result, completed interview, resolved issue, or changed metric can all show movement.

Constraints explain velocity

A slower workstream is not always an execution problem.

The team may be waiting on a dependency, approval, or data.

Next Checkpoint puts a boundary around uncertainty

Stakeholders do not need hour-by-hour detail.

They need to know when the current state will be reviewed and when the next signal will arrive.

Clear Doing reduces micromanagement

When ongoing progress is visible, people have less need to ask for task-level detail or intervene constantly.
