Part 1 · Opening scene

A work stopped before the world could understand it

Wardenclyffe is often remembered as the unfinished monument to Nikola Tesla’s global wireless dream. Funding weakened, aims expanded, and the tower was dismantled in 1917.

It is tempting to call this proof that a genius arrived too early. Yet that phrase must not erase questions of feasibility, evidence, finance and changing scope.

This chapter studies the gap between a person, a claim, an institution and the time capable of reading it.

An idea may outrun society’s clock; it still owes the world evidence.
Part 2 · A verdict made later

Right but impossible, or simply untested?

Later generations search the past for people who predicted the future, then read old sketches as prophecy.

A genuinely early idea may lack tools, infrastructure, language or a verifying community. Those absences do not automatically make it correct.

Recognition can repair neglect, but it can also turn uncertainty into a myth of perfect foresight.

Posterity does not merely rediscover the past; it edits it through the future that happened.
Part 3 · A field learns to read

Mendel and laws written before the word gene

Mendel described patterns of inheritance through thousands of pea crosses before biology possessed the modern language of genes.

His work was presented and published, yet only became central when later researchers encountered related questions.

A discovery needs readers, concepts, institutions and subsequent work before it can enter history.

A discovery can remain on paper long before a field learns how to read it.
Part 4 · Needed and rejected

Alan Turing: used, classified and treated unjustly

Turing helped establish theoretical computing and worked in collective codebreaking at Bletchley Park. Much wartime work remained secret for years.

The state could need his intellect and still criminalize him for a same-sex relationship.

Calling him ahead of his time must include the moral failure of a society that wanted the work while denying dignity to the person.

An age does not understand intelligence if it wants the work but refuses the human being.
Part 5 · Posthumous fame is collective work

Van Gogh and the person who taught the world to see him

Van Gogh had some avant-garde recognition during his final years, but global fame grew after his death.

Jo van Gogh-Bonger preserved, loaned and strategically sold works and published the letters, creating a context in which audiences could learn to see them.

Legacy depends on people who preserve traces, build context and keep a body of work in circulation.

A legacy does not speak by itself; someone keeps, arranges and makes it audible.
Part 6 · Against the misunderstood-genius myth

Rejection is not proof of genius

The romantic figure of the rejected creator turns failure into secret evidence of greatness.

Some ideas are blocked by conservative power; others fail because evidence is weak, costs are unrealistic or harms are ignored.

Persistence matters only when joined with learning, revision and the ability to change methods.

Opposition may signal innovation; it may also invite us to examine ourselves.
Part 7 · Personal myth during uncertainty

Keep a question without turning it into self-prophecy

Before recognition, no one knows whether persistence protects an important seed or deepens a dead end.

An honest personal myth records what changed, who challenged the work and which evidence justified continuation.

A vision may endure while its methods are rewritten many times.

An honest myth does not claim to have seen the whole future; it shows how work taught us to see farther.
Part 8 · A Forwork reflection

Profiles record recognition; work identity should preserve formation

Most profiles read stable achievements well and emerging directions poorly.

A deeper work identity separates aspiration from evidence by preserving questions, hypotheses, versions, feedback, collaborators and limits.

A better system does not declare who is ahead of their time. It gives forming work enough trace to be seen, tested and continued.

A good system does not crown prophets; it makes unfinished work legible and accountable.
