Do Not Give the Answer, Give a Way of Thinking

A father sits beside his daughter facing a difficult problem. He does not give the answer immediately, because one correct score helps today while learning how to find answers creates opportunities for a lifetime.

Answers that are correct today may become outdated tomorrow. What lasts longer is the ability to ask, observe, challenge and learn.

A good teacher does not create dependence; a good leader does not make every decision for the team; good parents do not live a child’s life. They teach others how to find their own way.

The creator once answered almost every question. Later he began asking what problem others saw, why a solution might work and what alternatives existed. Conversations slowed down, but people matured faster.

Knowledge solves one problem. Capability solves problems that have not appeared yet. Giving answers can create dependence; teaching how to think creates people who continue growing without us.

History advances not because every generation receives the same answers, but because each generation learns to ask new questions. Those questions led from wheels to engines, paper to the Internet and Earth to space.

Ask whether your guidance gives someone a temporary solution or helps them observe, question, test and decide independently.

An answer helps a person overcome one problem. A way of thinking helps them overcome problems we do not yet know will exist.
