You Are Not a Copy

A father looks at the height marks of his daughter rising each year and realizes no one expects a child to keep wearing the shoes of age five. Neither should we expect the next generation to keep the same thinking.

Every generation receives two gifts: what earlier generations achieved and the right to improve it. Keeping only the first turns legacy into a cage instead of a launchpad.

A true teacher is not afraid of a student becoming better; a true leader is not afraid of being surpassed; a true founder is not afraid of future generations changing what was built. Transmission exists so the work can keep growing.

The creator once wanted to preserve his ideas unchanged, but realized that an idea unable to improve will soon be left behind. Pride should come from seeing others make it better.

Civilizations advance by preserving the core while improving the form. Loyalty to values does not require loyalty to old methods.

When the next generation lives, learns or builds differently, it may prove that the values passed on are strong enough for independent movement. Mature legacy does not create copies.

Ask what you truly want the next person to preserve, what they should be allowed to change and where you need to learn to celebrate their ability to do better than you.

A successful legacy does not create people who resemble us. It creates people who can go farther than us.
