Internet — One Person, Hundreds of Versions
Platform Internet age
Distributed data across platforms
One person began to exist across many systems
The Internet transformed the landscape of human data.
Information no longer lived in a single system but across countless platforms.
- HR records.
- LinkedIn.
- GitHub.
- Behance.
- Facebook.
- X.
- Other specialized apps.
Publishing became easier, understanding became harder
The Internet made publishing information easier than ever.
There was more data, but the complete picture became more fragmented.
No single place held the whole story of a person.
Every platform saw a person through one lens
- Employers saw experience.
- Social networks saw engagement.
- Code repositories saw programming.
- Learning platforms saw credentials.
Each system captured one slice, but none captured the whole value of a person.
This became a distributed-data problem
Different systems stored different parts of the same person.
Each system was correct within its own scope, but none owned the whole truth.
The Internet age lacked context, not data
Finding a profile was no longer difficult.
The difficult part was connecting the fragments into one coherent story.
We entered an age of abundant data and scarce context.
Real value became fragmented
Achievements, projects, skills and professional relationships lived in different places.
People could do a great deal and still struggle to present their real capability.
Understanding a person requires more than collecting links
A list of links improves access, but does not necessarily create continuity.
Combining data is not the same as combining context.
The Internet connected computers, not complete professional identity
The Internet solved the problem of connecting systems.
It did not solve the problem of connecting a person’s entire professional identity.
The next step is synchronization through the cloud
Cloud computing emerged to synchronize information across systems.
But does synchronized data mean a person is understood?
That is the question of Technology Story 06.
