The Words That Never Appear in a KPI

A chapter about a quarterly review, a sentence that once kept someone from resigning, unscored contributions and achievements that remain after the numbers are forgotten

Not every contribution needs to be visible or converted into a number; some values quietly shape the quality of a team and a person’s sense of worth
01

Every number appears on the quarterly review screen

Revenue, progress, completion rates and target percentages are clearly displayed. Yet within those data boxes, he notices many important things are absent.

02

No column records patience or a timely word of encouragement

No chart shows who stayed late to guide a newcomer or which sentence helped a colleague move beyond the urge to resign.

03

A young colleague comes only to say one short sentence

He still remembers being told not to give up too quickly. To the speaker it was an ordinary conversation; to the listener it became a reason to remain.

04

We may forget what we said while another person carries its impact

He can barely remember the moment. Some of our greatest influence is created without our realizing that we are creating it.

05

The greatest influence cannot always be counted

It lives not in completion percentages but in the memory of someone who was recognized, protected or listened to at the right time.

06

Recognition, taking responsibility or spending an afternoon listening

These actions do not immediately improve a scorecard. They make the workplace somewhere people feel they belong.

07

Not every contribution needs to be named

Some value remains without recognition, reward or reporting. It becomes visible in how people treat one another and choose to stay.

08

Do not do only what is scored

Also do what helps another person feel valuable. Some achievements live in reports; others remain in a human heart long after every number is forgotten.
