Giving Away the Opportunity
A chapter about a successful project, a stage, a young colleague and the decision to step back so another person can tell the story they helped create
Growth sometimes means not fighting to remain at the center, but knowing when to step back so another person can rise and grow
A successful project creates an opportunity
Leadership wants someone to represent the team on stage. Every eye turns toward the person who led the project from the beginning.
He is the obvious choice
No one would question him taking the stage. His role, experience and visibility make the opportunity seem naturally his.
But he sees the young colleague’s quiet contribution
He remembers the late evenings, unnoticed corrections and steady growth he witnessed over many months.
He gives the stage to the person who carried much of the story
He proposes that she present because the person who did much of the work deserves to tell the story in her own voice.
Nervousness gradually becomes confidence
She begins with a slight tremble, then her voice grows stronger and the audience begins to applaud.
The happiness does not come from being recognized
It comes from watching someone else step into a place he once had the chance to enter. The joy is quieter, but larger than personal attention.
Growth means knowing when to step back
Giving away an opportunity does not always mean losing something. It can return as trust, another person’s growth and a stronger team.
Legacy is built through opportunities we are generous enough to give
Influence is not how often we stand on stage, but how many people become confident enough to stand there because of us.
